Name: Kate. But my middle name is apparently "verbosity"!

Age: Seventeen.

Location: Currently Northern Virginia, but due to college, soon to be the middle of Iowa. Which should be an interesting adjustment, to say the least.

How do you identify?: Queer? Cisgendered lesbian female would probably be the closest, but I've been known to get raging crushes on genderqueer guys (who still identify/represent as male), so - I don't really know. But I'm more or less okay with that.

Interests / hobbies: I'm an art and humanities person. I read lot - fanfiction, poetry, original fiction, nonfiction, etc. - and I write, mostly poetry and fanfiction, though I'm currently having a severe case of writer's block. Lately I've also been trying my hand at visual arts, as well as theatre. I sing, and I'm thinking of going professional if I can widen my range to what it used to be. The DC area has a fantastic theatre scene, so I go to plays and films when I can afford them, and museums when I can't. I people-watch, hang with friends, volunteer, listen to music, debate, daydream, design makeup for my school's theatre department, explore the city, make funny faces in the mirror, and take long walks, though not on the beach (I can't stand sand). I'm a total geek about a lot of things, and I tend to have long, spirited discussions about literature, music, anthropology, culture, art, random trivia, fandom, and the nature of all things. (I apparently sound quite pretentious when filling out introduction posts, too!) Recently I've tried learning to cook, too, but the less said of that, the better.

Favorite books: Haruki Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles. Richard Siken's Crush. Yusef Komunyakaa's Warhorses. Jeanette Winterson's The Passion. Michael Ondaajte's Running In the Family. Markus Zusak's The Book Thief. Everything by Annie Dillard, but especially her For the Time Being. Mark Jarman's Questions for Ecclesiastes . Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean Trees. Lewis Thomas' The Lives of a Cell. The short stories of Lorrie Moore and Amy Hempel. Anything by Terry Pratchett, especially Jingo (in my opinion, it's the funniest of the Discworld books). Marguerite Duras' The Lover and The War. Michael Perry's Population: 485. Everything by Bill Bryson, but especially The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way. Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses. Italo Calovino's Invisible Cities. The Harry Potter books. Anything by David Sedaris. Mark Doty's Atlantis and Source. Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy. Really, I could go on and on (and on and on and on...) here. I <3 books.

Favorite films: Sherlock Holmes (2009), Amelie, Angels In America, Gangs of New York, Chicago, The Illusionist, the Thin Man series, Rocky Horror Picture Show, To Be or Not to Be, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the fourth Die Hard and the latest James Bond movies (the sexism/racism/what-have-you of the earlier ones makes me squirm), Cold Mountain, House of Flying Daggers, V for Vendetta, 28 Days Later, and a whole host of others I'm probably forgetting at the moment, because my memory? Is crap.

Favorite television series: Bones, Supernatural (though the sexism/racism/etc. of that too makes me squirm), Avatar: the Last Airbender, Burn Notice, Leverage, Dexter, Stargate: Atlantis, Carnivale, Psych, Static Shock, and new!Doctor Who. (AMY <3 <3 <3.)

Favorite music: Mirah, Coldplay, Suzanne Vega, the Dandy Warhols, VV Brown, Tori Amos, Garbage, Sufjan Stevens, Laura Marling, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Imogen Heap, Emily Jane Smith, Santana, Great Lake Swimmers, Sage Francis, Cat Power, the Shins, Wintersleep, Zoe Keating, Forest City Lovers, Heather Nova, Lhasa de Sela, Nancy Elizabeth, the Mountain Goats, Astronautalis, Iron & Wine, Songs: Ohia, Ane Brun, Bomb the Bass, Nina Simone, Lupe Fiasco, Fort Minor, Vienna Teng, Lady Gaga, Joanna Newsom, PJ Harvey, Bat for Lashes, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Neko Case, Florence and the Machine, Metric, Ludovico Einaudi, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, Zero 7. I also have an unholy love for good soundtracks - Bear McCreary, Murray Gold, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, et al.

What would you like to send/receive?: I love old-fashioned letters (i.e. not email / AIM) and packages - mix CDs! poetry! food! I especially love food - though I don't know if I'll be able to afford to send anything big.

Who would you like to send and receive mail from?: Anyone! (Especially people who wouldn't mind that I'm a wee bit absent-minded about dates.)

What countries would you like to receive mail from and send to?: Anywhere! (However, I only speak English and a tiny bit of Spanish, and if I'm sending stuff internationally, I probably would resort to email - as if one weren't bad enough, international mail is confusing and expensive.)

Anything that you would particularly NOT like to receive?: Organs, unless I can sell them on the black market and pay for my college tuition.

What would be in your dream letter or package?: Mix CDs! Poetry! Baked goods! Postcards from far-off regions! Jewelry! Artwork! I enjoy trinkets, doodles, good stories, and unusual items.

Anything else you'd like to add?: The revolution will not be televised? All we need is love?
