Date: 2010-06-23 09:37 pm (UTC)Wow it got totally buried under all the new people! LOL that LJ spotlight really made a difference!
As for Shutter Island, I kind of obsessed and went crazy over it, but there is literally zero fandom, this makes me very sad.
It's not really a thriller in terms of a super clever plot twist like Usual Suspects, BUT watch it for the performances, which I thought were stellar. I rave about it on my lj if you find the Shutter Island tag :)

Date: 2010-06-23 09:46 pm (UTC)Canavan: I've read her Magician's Guild books ages ago, although I now skip anything in the second and third books without Dannyl, I just don't find the other characters as interesting, even though they are in more plot-related danger and tension.
Does "Oranges" refer to the "...not the only fruit" variety? If so, just...no. XD I dislike that book with such a passion XD

Date: 2010-06-23 09:56 pm (UTC)Yup it was Magician's Guild. Still not quite over the guy dying (I forget names so quick >_<) The leader magician dude.
Yup it does! Why didn't you like it? I thought it was interesting enough, but I read another of hers, 'Sexing the Cherry' I couldn't stand that one, very weird, disjointed narrative and just generally squicky content, in a vague sort of way.

Date: 2010-06-23 10:16 pm (UTC)It felt like she was trying to be "radical" in writing about lesbianism, but I felt wasn't quite able it push it to a level of emotional depth which is required to write a statement about the natural sexuality of many women. It just ended up forced, and without much by the way of conviction or feeling for Jeanette's relationships.

Date: 2010-06-23 11:06 pm (UTC)Anyway, I'd definitely recommend Brownrigg, there is a sort of element of pretentiousness to it as well, but it makes sense for the character, she's a young student, and very in love with herself and her intellectual journey and the whole thing of being young and discovering love etc. I can post it to you if you like, (and promise not to... drop it into a puddle or something!)

(Plus my english teacher went to Uni with her and apparently she was a total bitch XD)
